Plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) have the extraordinary capability to squeeze down an electromagnetic radiation at the nanoscale through a phenomenon called localized plasmonic resonance. NPs can also behave as nano-sized sources of heat when pumped sufficiently with suitable (resonant) radiation. In this talk, we present and discuss several plasmonic platforms, that can be photo-heated by a resonant light source. We overview the main thermo-optical properties of random distribution of gold nanospheres/nanorods arrays and gold nanorods/titania composites. In the light of multidisciplinary applied physics, we show that our hot platforms have interesting applications in the field of liquid crystal-based sensor systems, biomedicine, water disinfection, photocatalysis and cultural heritage protection.
