Hilbert-Huang transform is a method introduced to decompose nonlinear, nonstationary time series into a sum of different basis functions, each one having a characteristic time scale. This approach provides an optimal method for the estimation of scaling exponents in both Eulerian and Lagrangian turbulence. By disentangling the large-scale forcing which affects the small-scale statistics, the statistical properties of intermittency of passive scalar fields are identical to those obtained from the multifractal prediction in the Lagrangian frame for the velocity trajectory or with the scaling obtained through extended self similarity for velocity fluctuations. The results suggest a possible universality of turbulence scaling.
