Forty years ago, the gluon, carrier of the strong force, was discovered at the PETRA storage ring at DESY in Hamburg. It is interesting to note that an electron-positron collider provided the best tool to discover and study the properties of the gluon. In the same way as electrons radiate photons, quarks can radiate gluons, leading to additional jets of particles. The talk reviews the history of the discovery, the underlying theoretical predictions and some of the subsequent studies of the properties of strong interactions.
