The progress planar technology for the production of silicon devices allows to propose high-energy resolution silicon drift detectors capable of room temperature operation. This, together with the availability of reliable detector modeling and extreme low noise dedicated front-end electronics, opens the way to the study of fast spectroscopic detectors with the aim to provide solutions to the quest for high flux low energy x-ray detection systems.
