Silicon Drift Detectors are well-known devices, commonly used in X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, characterized by good performances in terms of energy resolution and the capability to acquire photons in a wide energy range. The main limitation of these detectors concerns the maximum achievable count-rate, which is often limited by small solid angle coverage as well as by early saturation of the detection system. This work describes new approaches able both to increase the acquisition solid angle and to handle high count-rates. The most significant results obtained with conventional radioactive sources and synchrotron light are reported.
