The High Energy Cosmic-Radiation Detection facility (HERD) will be placed on board the future Chinese Space Station, with expected operation from 2025 to 2035. The main goals cover the measurement of a precise electron+positron and nuclei spectra, composition measurements up to the energy of the knee spectral feature, accurate anisotropy scanning and detection of signals of dark matter. Here we report on the description of the detector and the expected performance measuring the arrival direction and energy of particles of different nature up to PeV energies.
