The development of Monolithic Active Pixel sensors to detect radiation is gaining importance in particle detector technologies. Based on commercial CMOS technology, these detectors are primarily designed for high energy physics experiments and their performance has been widely tested for ultra-relativistic particles. We take the ALPIDE detector, developed by ALICE collaboration for the ITS upgrade, as a case-study and we determine its response to nuclei of energy as low as few tens of MeV/nucleon. The aim of the study is to extend the use of ALPIDE to other fields, like medical physics and space applications. The results from beam tests performed in Trento (APSS proton therapy center) and Catania (CATANA) are reported, proving the reliability of the technology and showing some interesting features related to high energy deposition on the detector.
