We present mass resolved deep inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the atomic kinetic energy of oxygen in light and heavy water across the solid-liquid melting point. Nuclear quantum effects influence the microscopic structural and dynamical behavior of hydrogen bonded systems. We show that, even at the triple point, more than 30 percent of the oxygen mean kinetic energy is due to nuclear quantum effects. Moreover, differences of the oxygen local environments between light and heavy water are reflected in the measured excess quantum kinetic energies in the two isotopic forms.
