A mini-array of small plastic scintillators with a light readout based on wavelength shifter (WLS) bars and Silicon photomultipliers has been designed with the primary aim of providing graduate students with a facility to detect extensive air showers under different conditions. The array is modular and reconfigurable and it is based on a variable number of identical detection modules. To keep the overall cost of the facility under reasonable limits, low cost solutions were adopted both for the detectors and the involved electronics. The first detection modules of the array have already been tested and started to operate. This contribution will discuss the main design parameters and preliminary results.
