Improving image quality without increasing delivered dose is the challenge of medical imaging. Photon-counting detectors are ready for clinical application, resulting in low-noise and low-dose images. The dose reduction is due to the high efficiency of edge-on geometry of the Si strip detectors or due to the high Z of the 2D sensors. Moreover, the visibility of low-contrast details is very much improved when the acquisition set-up allows the detection of phase-contrast. A program of phase-contrast breast-CT is under development in Trieste (Elettra synchrotron radiation laboratory) using a CdTe photon-counting detector: preliminary results will be discussed.
