Free radicals in hydroxyapatite-alginate composite material induced by X-rays: EPR characterisation.

We show the strong radioinduced Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) signal of hydroxyapatite alginate (HApA), a porous material (mass density 0.3 g/cm${}^{3}$ in this study) based on sodium alginate polymer and hydroxyapatite (HAp) crystallites. The EPR lineshape of HApA radicals resembles that of irradiated pure HAp $(CO_{2}^{- *}$ stable radical), with additional, overlapping species (unstable $CO_{3}^{3 - *}$ and $CO^{-}$ radicals) presenting long decay times (about 10 days and 15 months, respectively), compatible with stabilization at microenvironments at the interface layer between the inorganic (HAp) and the organic (sodium alginate) components. This suggests HApA as a possible EPR dosimetric material of low-density lung tissue.
