A historical introduction to X-ray absorption spectroscopy, including the development of experimental techniques and data interpretation approaches, will be reviewed. The main characteristics and fields of applications will be highlighted emphasizing the essential role of synchrotron radiation sources. Specific applications of the spectroscopy to investigate the structure of metallic liquids both in the stable and metastable undercooled states will be presented. The access to the measurement of the crystalline nucleation rate in deeply undercooled liquid metals will be addressed.
