Seismic attenuation measures the energy lost by seismic waves propagating into the heterogeneous Earth. The latest results of seismic attenuation tomography performed using both coherent waves and the stochastic signature of heterogeneities on seismic wave fields are proposed here at all lithospheric scales. The complexity associated with defining a coherent and incoherent wave fields and the corresponding sensitivity, data coverage and biases between an inexact theory and tomographic uncertainties remain our main challenge. When these are improved, attenuation imaging can provide improved models of heterogeneous structures and better connections with alternative geophysical observations than seismic velocity tomography.
