We present the construction and the application of biocompatible micro- and nano-structures that can be administered systemically and transport in a targeted and effective way drugs, small molecules, stem cells or immune system cells. Both alginate/chitosan nano-vesicles and biomimetic/bioinspired hybrid organic/inorganic $SiO_2$-based nanostructures have been currently exploited to this aim. Moreover, the combination of polymeric nano-systems with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles shows a pH-responsive behaviour of great significance in controlled drug delivery and targeting of specific sites. Some applications of these systems and the impact of the polysaccharide sub-micron vesicles on human immune cells will be presented and discussed.
