Estimation of average depths to sources of magnetic and gravity field anomalies can be accomplished by assuming either a statistical ensemble of homogeneous sources or even a fractal source distribution. Here, we review the Spector and Grant's and the fractal spectral methods and evidence practical constraints on the depth estimation and inherent assumptions/limitations of the two approaches. Assuming a statistical ensemble of homogeneous sources, we propose a new technique to estimate the source depth to the bottom by solving for the thickness factor.
