Radiative mechanisms responsible for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are still uncertain. Studies suggest the presence of spectral features at few keV that would provide a key observation in support of the fireball model. HERMES will be able to inquire this and other fundamental aspect of GRB physics in a compact microsatellite package, while serving the supportive role of an all-sky monitor for the new generation of gravitational interferometers. In this contribution we will outline HERMES innovative detector design and present our recent results about feasibility for space applications of GAGG:Ce, a promising but still largely uncharted class of inorganic scintillators.
