In this study a simple method to evaluate the average absorbed dose in digital breast tomosynthesis procedures is developed. A new physical quantity (Average Absorbed Breast Dose, 2ABD) is proposed as a new dosimetric index, according to the European Directive EU59/2013. In order to compute 2ABD, a model for evaluating the incident air-kerma has been developed and the absorption properties of a water-equivalent phantom at different depths have been investigated. Only tube voltage, tube load, breast thickness, focus-to-surface distance, anode-filter combination and X-ray tube yield are required to calculate 2ABD. Four mammographic devices have been employed to validate this method.
